Joint Injections with Ultrasound Guidance

Use of cortisone injections in the treatment of muscle and joint inflammatory reactions is becoming increasingly popular. Muscle injections are a remarkably effective adjunct to pharmacologic and physical therapies and are safe and easy to perform. Joint injections, while technically more difficult to perform, also can be of great benefit in the patient's recovery.

These injections may be used to:

• relieve pain from some medical conditions (arthritis, tendintis).

• remove fluid from an area near a joint or to stop the fluid from coming back.

• manage pain before surgery.

• manage pain if you are not medically able to have surgery.

Our office uses ultrasound to guide this injection. The use of ultrasound needle guidance improves the performance, outcomes and the cost-effectiveness of knee injections in people with osteoarthritis.

The ultrasound helps your doctor locate where the needle should enter the skin. This spot will be cleaned and marked. The doctor will inject local anesthesia to numb your skin. Next, the anesthetic, steroid or a mixture of both will be injected. This may cause some mild pain.
